Robert Jordan was born October 17, 1948 as James Oliver Rigney Jr. in Charleston, South Carolina. At the age of 4, he had taught himself how to read with a little help from his older brother. He lived with his wife Harriet McDougal in a house built in 1797. During the course of his life, he served 2 tours in Vietnam as a helicopter gunner for the U.S Army. After returning from Vietnam he enrolled in The Citadel and received and undergraduate degree in physics. Once finishing school he was hired on as a nuclear engineer for the U.S Navy.

His writing career began in 1977 and was continued until his death. He specified in the fantasy genre and his best selling books were in the series The Wheel of Time. That series has grown to be the most important and best selling fantasy series ever recorded in history. With over 14 million copies sold in North America alone. His career ended on September 16, 2007 when he passed away, due to a rare blood disease called amyloidosis.
